The situation of regional economies worsens: most activities are in crisis

Regional economies in Argentina are facing significant challenges, with most sectors either in crisis or stagnant, according to a report by Coninagro.

The report 'Semáforo de las Economías Regionales' by Coninagro indicates that regional economies in Argentina have begun the year with a worsening of their conditions, leading to a crisis or stagnation in the majority of sectors. Only a few activities are experiencing growth, as noted in the report which assesses 19 different activities nationwide. In January 2026, the report classified 4 activities as growing (green), 7 as stagnant (yellow), and 8 as in crisis (red), indicating a decline in economic performance compared to the previous month.

Key sectors facing crisis status include yerba mate, rice, potatoes, wine, must, vegetables, and cotton, which have seen a deterioration in their economic conditions. Recently, the dairy and peanut sectors also shifted from stagnation to crisis. The key problems affecting these sectors are rooted in their business components, highlighting challenges within production, market access, and changing consumer demands.

The implications of this economic crisis are significant not only for the farmers and producers in these sectors but also for the regional economies as a whole. It raises concerns about food security and economic stability within the country, with many families relying on these industries for their livelihoods. If trends do not reverse, continued economic decline could lead to broader socio-economic challenges across Argentina.
