These Apple Phones Have Just Become Obsolete โ€“ This Is What It Means

Apple has discontinued support for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 (8GB), marking them as obsolete devices.

On Monday, Apple announced that it has stopped supporting two of its older iPhone models: the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4 (8GB). The iPhone 5 was first launched in 2012, while the iPhone 4 (8GB version) was released in 2011. Despite this announcement, updates regarding these changes were not yet reflected on Apple's Finnish support page, where the iPhone 5 is still not listed as obsolete, and only the black version of the iPhone 4 appears in the obsolete devices list.

According to Apple's classification, a product is considered 'vintage' if it has not been sold for more than five years but less than seven years. In contrast, an obsolete product is one that has not been sold for over seven years. With this change, all hardware support for obsolete products is terminated, meaning that service providers can no longer order parts for such devices. However, there may be exceptions for some products, and Macs may still be eligible for battery service.

This shift in Apple's support policy highlights the tech giant's ongoing efforts to phase out older technology in favor of supporting newer models. Consequently, users of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 may need to consider upgrading to newer devices or face challenges in receiving service and support for their current phones. This move is part of a broader trend in the tech industry where companies encourage customers to adopt newer models as technological advancements rapidly evolve, potentially leaving behind a segment of users who rely on older devices.
