The historical railway station is open again in Tuusula - new entrepreneur: "Crazy business"
The old railway station in Jokela, Tuusula has reopened as a restaurant run by a local couple after being purchased by the municipality.
The historical wooden railway station in Jokela, built in 1875, has recently been repurposed into a restaurant, marking a significant transformation in the local community. The old ticket sales ceased in 2011, and the station was put up for sale by VR in 2023. In a bid to revitalize the area, the municipality of Tuusula acquired the station and sought entrepreneurs to breathe new life into the venue, aiming to attract new visitors and foster community engagement.
Noora Lyytikäinen and Tuomo Niemelä, a local entrepreneurial couple, opened the restaurant just over a week ago, expressing their excitement as well as the pressures of starting a new business in a competitive environment. Lyytikäinen revealed that when they were informed they had secured the establishment, it felt unbelievable, given the number of potential candidates who were also interested in the site. The couple has clearly defined roles within the restaurant, with Lyytikäinen managing the front of house while Niemelä takes care of the kitchen. The restaurant has been named Ratapässit after the old locomotives, reflecting a nod to the region's railway heritage.
This reopening represents not only a new business venture but also a broader effort to revitalize the historical significance of the railway station for the local community. The combination of nostalgia for the historical site and the introduction of a culinary space offers an opportunity for greater community interaction, potentially enhancing local tourism and engagement in Tuusula. This initiative underscores the importance of preserving historical buildings while adapting them to modern uses, ensuring their relevance in contemporary society.
