Police Found Hundreds of Ammunition During Construction of Highway D3

Czech police uncovered hundreds of World War II ammunition pieces, including 200 grenades, during the construction of Highway D3 near Dolní Dvořiště.

Over the course of two years, police explosives experts discovered hundreds of various World War II munitions at a construction site for Highway D3 near Dolní Dvořiště in the Český Krumlov region of Czechia. Among the finds were 200 grenades, located in the ground over spans of hundreds of meters. The police technician Jiří Toufar noted that the area was historically significant, being along a demarcation line in the war where troops retreated southward.

The construction for the segment of Highway D3 from Nažidla to Dolní Dvořiště, where the ammunition was found, began in early January 2024. The project, which includes a 3.5-kilometer stretch, has an estimated cost of 875 million korunas and is expected to commence operations within the year. The discovery of the ammunition underscores the historical impact of World War II in the region and the ongoing challenges of modern infrastructure development.

During the highway's construction, the explosives experts uncovered an estimated 250 kilograms of infantry ammunition and a kilogram of explosives, most of which originated from Hungary, Germany, or the former Czechoslovakia. Toufar mentioned that the demolition of munitions usually occurred on-site, requiring coordination with landowners. Last year, the pyrotechnics team undertook 200 missions in South Bohemia, indicating the extent of such operations in areas with historical conflict remnants.
