Before the OB runoff: Attack at the campaign booth: Munich man threatens Green volunteer

A Munich man was arrested for threatening a Green party volunteer during a campaign event amidst the municipal election run-off.

In the final phase of the Munich municipal election campaign, a Green party information booth was attacked again just before the impending run-off election between Dominik Krause of the Greens and Dieter Reiter of the SPD. A 40-year-old Munich man launched an unprovoked attack on the campaign team set up in the Tal area of Munich's old town, damaging one of the election posters. When a female volunteer, aged 60, confronted him, he brandished a wooden stick and threatened her, leading to his temporary arrest.

The police have reported similar acts of aggression towards political campaign booths in Munich, raising concerns about the safety of volunteers and the climate of political discourse in the region. Just days before this incident, on January 4th, another advocacy stand of the Greens in Neuperlach was vandalized, and party members were verbally abused. Previous months also saw attacks on local politicians from the CSU party, highlighting a troubling trend of increasing aggression towards campaign events.

The state protection unit is now investigating the arrested individual for threats and property damage. These repeated incidents of political violence underscore the escalating tensions in the lead-up to the elections and pose serious implications for the democratic process, as they threaten not only the safety of campaign volunteers but also the overall integrity of political engagement in the community.
