Bird flu breaks out in Viimsi and Pirita, killing numerous swans
Bird flu outbreaks in Viimsi and Pirita have led to the deaths of many swans, according to the Estonian Agricultural and Food Authority.
The Estonian Agricultural and Food Authority has reported a bird flu outbreak in the coastal areas of Viimsi and Pirita, resulting in a significant number of swan fatalities. Olev Kalda, the head of the animal health and welfare department, stated that the dead swans found along the shores are likely infected with the virus, as previous analyses in the region had already confirmed the presence of the disease. Therefore, individual testing of each bird is deemed unnecessary given the widespread knowledge of the virus in that particular area.
Kalda elaborated on the impact of the outbreak, indicating that various wild and waterfowl species are susceptible to the disease, but swans are currently the most common casualties observed at the beaches. This highlights a concerning trend in the local avian population, as the presence of bird flu raises concerns not only for wildlife but also for potential implications on human health and environmental balance.
The authorities have indicated their protocol regarding deceased birds, emphasizing the need for monitoring and containment strategies to prevent further spread of the disease. Although local populations may be alarmed by the presence of dead swans, the Agricultural and Food Authority is confident in their understanding of the outbreak's scope and is working to manage the situation effectively.
