Research by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency: It is not worth continuing the planning of the Pori–Parkano–Haapamäki railway

A report from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency recommends against continuing the planning of the Pori–Parkano–Haapamäki railway due to high costs and low demand for both freight and passenger transport.

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has released a report suggesting that the planning for the Pori–Parkano–Haapamäki railway should not proceed. The railway, which has not been maintained for decades due to minimal use, is in a significantly deteriorated condition. Although the railway corridor still exists, the report indicates that it would essentially require a complete reconstruction, with estimated costs ranging between €1 to €1.3 billion.

The demand forecasts for freight traffic on the new line appear to be relatively low. The report suggests that most freight traffic would continue to utilize the existing Tampere–Pori line, as it provides a faster route from Eastern Finland. Additionally, the potential passenger market is also assessed as minimal, leading to the conclusion that the high costs and low demand render the renovation and reopening of the railway financially unviable. The report estimates that the project’s profitability would remain at least €550 million in the negative.

Environmental challenges have also been noted in relation to the potential project, suggesting that even if economic factors were favorable, there could still be significant ecological concerns to address. The overall implication of the report emphasizes the need for critical assessment of infrastructure projects, and encourages a re-evaluation of transportation needs in the region, taking into account sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
