Prime Minister Takaichi meets with Ishin's Yoshimura, confirms goal of 'reducing the number of seats' and others
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura confirmed their commitment to reducing the number of seats in the House of Representatives during a meeting aimed at furthering their coalition agreements.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held a meeting with Hirofumi Yoshimura, the representative of the Japan Innovation Party and Governor of Osaka, in the National Diet on the 17th. During this closed-door meeting, which lasted approximately 25 minutes and was attended by executive members from both parties, the two leaders reaffirmed their goals outlined in the coalition agreement, including a 10% reduction in the number of seats in the House of Representatives and legislation concerning the creation of a penalty for damaging the national flag. Yoshimura elaborated in a subsequent press conference that the party plans to submit a bill to cut 45 seats in the upcoming legislative session, stating, "We have reaffirmed our commitment to make this happen."
The initiative to reduce the number of seats, specifically by cutting 45 only from proportional representation, was reiterated by Yoshimura, though specifics were to be finalized in discussions between the parties. The secretary-general of the LDP, Toshiki Suzuki, commented to the press that the details of the reduction would be decided through expert discussions rather than immediate resolutions in the meeting, stating, "Nothing was firmly decided today."
Last year, a bill was presented aiming for automatic reductions if a consensus wasnβt reached within a year, but it failed to gain support from opposition parties. In addition to seat reduction, Yoshimura also emphasized the importance of pursuing legislation regarding the creation of the so-called 'crime of damaging a national flag' and advancing a plan for a 'secondary capital'. Both are included in the coalition framework but were not discussed in detail regarding corporate political contributions, which remain contentious within political reform discussions. Yoshimura noted that this issue was not raised during their talks, and the coalition agreement stipulated to reach a conclusion before September 2027 during Takaichiβs term as party president.
