Paweł Niewiadomski: The government helped, but it was travel agencies that brought the most Poles back from the Middle East
Travel agencies were primarily responsible for repatriating Polish tourists from the Middle East, despite the government's assistance in the process.
Paweł Niewiadomski discussed the efforts to repatriate Polish citizens from the Middle East, emphasizing that while the government provided assistance, private travel agencies played a critical role in bringing the majority of tourists home. Niewiadomski noted the importance of reflecting on the response and shared his observations regarding the efforts undertaken, especially focusing on the weaknesses of the Odyseusz system used for registering and maintaining contact with Poles abroad. He pointed out that the system had several flaws that hindered effective communication during the repatriation efforts.
He also highlighted that a lack of coherent messaging regarding the situation of Polish nationals and the rescue missions contributed to misunderstandings among the public. This led to the misconception that the government was solely responsible for the repatriation, sending planes to evacuate all citizens. Contrary to this perception, he revealed that over 8,000 out of the 14,000 Poles who returned home were actually flown by travel agencies, emphasizing their significant role in the repatriation effort.
Looking forward, Niewiadomski mentioned that the Polish tourism sector is poised for growth, which is anticipated to benefit the wider economy as well. The Ministry of Sport and Tourism is optimistic about the revenues in the coming year, suggesting that tourists who purchased packages from tour organizers received better support and assurances compared to those who did not. This experience may lead to future improvements in how travel agencies engage with emergency situations involving citizens abroad.
