Raimo Ülavere: boring and tedious activities build resilience
Raimo Ülavere argues that in modern society, where comfort is prioritized, people are increasingly avoiding challenging experiences, but routine and tedious activities are essential for building resilience.
In a recent interview on Terevisioon, trainer Raimo Ülavere discussed the trend in today's welfare society towards avoiding challenges and uncomfortable situations in favor of comfort. He highlighted that this tendency means many people seek to evade any form of struggle or failure, leading to an avoidance of experiences that could build character and resilience.
Ülavere explained that the modern understanding of trauma has evolved to include not only significant life events like wars and accidents but also experiences such as difficult exams, falling out with friends, or any form of effort that challenges an individual. This broadened definition can lead to a mentality in which people feel pressured to avoid stressors, making them less prepared for real-life challenges.
According to Ülavere, the most concerning consequence of this avoidance is that individuals may become both mentally and physically unfit for tackling life’s inevitable challenges. By shunning discomfort and the hard work required to overcome difficulties, many could find themselves lacking the resilience to deal with future issues, highlighting the need for society to embrace rather than avoid hardship.
