Emergency Rooms May Send Home Patients With Minor Health Concerns Starting in April

Starting April 1st, emergency rooms in Estonia will be permitted to send home patients who do not require immediate medical attention based on initial assessments.

Beginning April 1st, a new policy in Estonia will allow emergency medical departments (EMO) to limit their intake of patients to those who, upon initial assessment by triage nurses, require further emergency care. This change comes in response to data from the Ministry of Social Affairs, indicating that 58 percent of individuals who visited EMOs last year did not actually require urgent medical attention. The overwhelming patient volume has particularly affected emergency departments in Tallinn and Tartu, leading to a need for operational adjustments.
