Police Warns About Choking Sex: Oxygen Deprivation in Seconds

The Swedish Police are raising awareness about the dangers of choking during sexual activities among youth, emphasizing a new educational material aimed at high school students and teachers.

The Swedish Police have issued a warning regarding the increasing trend of choking during sexual activities, particularly among young people. To address this concern, they are launching new educational resources aimed at high school students and teachers. Although it is challenging to determine the prevalence of choking in young people's relationships, the police stress the potential severe consequences that can arise from these behaviors.

Anna Jinghede Sundwall, a forensic technician who also researches choking violence, highlighted that there is no safe way to choke someone. This scenario remains dangerous regardless of consent, as the brain is not concerned with whether the act is mutual. Sundwall's research indicates that it can take as little as 7 to 8 seconds for someone to lose consciousness due to oxygen deprivation, emphasizing the lethal risks involved.

While international studies have reported a rise in choking sex among youth, there is currently a lack of research specifically addressing this phenomenon in Sweden. The proactive measures taken by the police to educate the young population regarding the inherent dangers of this practice underscore the urgent need for awareness and prevention strategies to protect vulnerable individuals.
