"Mother, please bring the PET bottle cap closed next time" "Oh, I didn't know"... Our neighborhood recycling guardian

Residents in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul are actively participating in a community recycling initiative that emphasizes proper recycling practices to enhance efficiency.

On January 13, locals in the Shinhyeong Children's Park, Eunpyeong-gu, gathered with bags of recyclables including plastic bottles, milk cartons, and various other recyclable materials at an organized community collection event. The initiative encourages residents to properly prepare their recyclables—like ensuring caps are secured on bottles to prevent contamination—while volunteers provided education on what can and cannot be recycled. As a result, within just 18 minutes, five large bags of recyclables were collected in a structured and systematic manner.

This community effort is part of a broader response to a recent ban on direct landfill disposal of household waste, enacted in January to reduce the environmental impact of burning and burying trash. The policy is particularly significant as it is slated to extend to non-metropolitan areas by 2030, sparking regional tensions as waste from the metropolitan area is displaced. Eunpyeong-gu, with its lower-density residential layout, has proactively tackled waste management issues and has initiated the "Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa" project since 2019 to improve recycling rates through community engagement and support from resource management officials who assist residents in proper waste separation.

With the establishment of mobile collection points and designated coordinators across 168 locations, Eunpyeong-gu is making strides in fostering a culture of recycling and environmental responsibility. The initiative operates every Thursday and Friday evenings and during weekday afternoons at various community centers. The ongoing efforts aim to educate and empower residents to take action towards sustainable waste management practices, contributing to the reduction of landfill waste and promoting a cleaner environment for their community.
