Practitioner says omeprazole may cause 'two problems' for anyone on it for reflux
A herbal practitioner warns that prolonged use of omeprazole could lead to two significant health issues for users treating acid reflux.
In a recent episode of the podcast Diary of a CEO, herbal practitioner Simon Mills discussed the potential risks associated with long-term use of omeprazole, a widely prescribed proton pump inhibitor (PPI) commonly used to treat acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion. Mills, who has extensive experience in herbal medicine and has advised the UK House of Lords, highlighted that while omeprazole is beneficial for managing symptoms, it is important to consider the long-term implications of using such medications.
Mills elaborated on two primary problems that may arise from the chronic use of PPIs like omeprazole. First, he noted the risk of nutrient deficiencies, particularly vitamin B12 and magnesium, which are essential for various bodily functions. This can lead to further complications such as bone fractures and neurological problems. Second, he indicated a possible increase in susceptibility to gut infections, which could arise due to altered stomach acidity, potentially resulting in conditions like Clostridium difficile infections.
Given these concerns, Mills advocates for individuals who rely on omeprazole and similar medications to regularly consult healthcare professionals about their treatment plans. He emphasizes the importance of exploring alternative therapies and making lifestyle adjustments to manage acid reflux symptoms more effectively, without solely relying on PPIs, which may lead to adverse health effects over prolonged use.
