Milla, 17, aims for Formula 1

Seventeen-year-old Milla Sjöstrand, who began racing at a young age, is currently competing in Formula 4 and faces significant financial challenges in her pursuit of a career in Formula 1.

Milla Sjöstrand, a 17-year-old racing enthusiast from Sweden, ignited her passion for motorsport while karting during her summer holidays. Beginning her competitive journey at just seven years old, she has now moved up to Formula 4. However, she emphasizes that while her love for racing takes center stage, the majority of her time is consumed by the business aspects of motorsport, such as seeking sponsorships to fund her racing career. Approximately 90% of her efforts are devoted to entrepreneurial activities necessary to support her drive on the track.

In a recent commentary by F1 expert Mervi Kallio, it was revealed that the financial burden of transitioning from karting to Formula 1 can exceed $20 million. Milla herself notes the unfortunate reality that regardless of one's talent as a driver, financial backing is crucial for advancing through the ranks, including into Formula 2. This challenge reflects a broader issue in motorsport where not only skill but also economic resources determine the trajectory of a racing career.

The establishment of the F1 Academy in 2023 provides a platform for female drivers aged 16 to 25 to compete over two seasons, thereby creating more opportunities for women in motorsport. As exemplified by recent F1 Academy champion Doriane Pin, the need for continued support for female drivers persists beyond initial racing leagues. Milla's aspirations illustrate both the potential for emerging talent in motorsports as well as the significant obstacles presented by the financial demands of the sport, highlighting an area in need of reform and sponsorship solutions for young athletes.
