President Yoon: 'Preparing Additional Budget for War... Considering Direct Support for Citizens at the Same Amount'

President Yoon Seok-yeol has ordered the preparation of an additional budget due to the prolonged war situation in the Middle East, alongside a review of energy-saving measures like a vehicle restriction system.

On October 17, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol emphasized the need for an additional budget formulation in response to the escalating conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran. During a cabinet meeting at the government complex in Sejong City, he noted that the situation in the Middle East is worsening beyond initial expectations. Consequently, he urged his government to devise measures considering the worst-case scenario, including efforts to secure additional oil supplies through diplomatic channels, similar to past actions with the United Arab Emirates.

President Yoon highlighted the importance of conserving energy amid rising geopolitical tensions, advocating for the early establishment of various measures to reduce demand, such as a vehicle restriction based on license plate numbers, which could be implemented for the first time in history. By limiting vehicle use based on the last digit of license plates, the government aims to reduce the number of cars on the road to conserve fuel. This approach echoes regulations previously in place during the Gulf War and the 1997 financial crisis.

Furthermore, President Yoon stressed the necessity of a timely supplementary budget to mitigate the economic impact of prolonged conflict on the vulnerable segments of society. He instructed economic ministers to prioritize direct financial support to citizens rather than tax cuts as a preferred method of assistance, specifically highlighting the importance of providing relief to economically disadvantaged regions to foster economic circulation and stability in response to rising costs.
