My dog, like family, died in a fire, reconciliation established with the hospital: apology posted
A Tokyo animal hospital reached a settlement in a lawsuit after a pet dog died in a fire, with the hospital agreeing to pay compensation and post an apology.
In a recent case, a settlement was reached in Tokyo after a pet dog died in a fire while hospitalized at an animal clinic. The dog's owner, Yoshihito Satoi, had sued the hospital for 3 million yen, claiming that their negligence led to the incident. The court was informed that the hospital would pay a resolution fee of 1 million yen and publish an apology on their website for one year, acknowledging the circumstances surrounding the dog's death.
The tragic incident involved 'Mieru', a mixed breed of Maltese and Toy Poodle, which had been undergoing surgery for a hernia when the fire broke out just three days later. Satoi alleged that the fire resulted from the hospital's failure to disconnect certain equipment, indicating a lack of responsibility regarding the safety of the pets in their care. The reconciliation process included statements from Satoi and his lawyer, Hiroshi Shibuya, who highlighted the disparity in compensation typically awarded for the loss of pets compared to that for humans.
Satoi expressed his grief over Mieru's death, emphasizing their close bond, as she was a rescue dog and had brought joy to his life for five years. He reflected on the settlement as a form of recognition of her life and loss, affirming that while the compensation sum was modest, it represented the value of a beloved pet's life.
