Zelensky Reveals How He Tried to Convince Iran Not to Supply 'Shaheds' to Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky detailed efforts to persuade Iran against providing Shahed drones to Russia, emphasizing Iran's involvement beyond mere supply.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed the attempts made by Kyiv to dissuade Iran from supplying Shahed drones to Russia. He stated that Iran had been warned about the potential use of these drones against civilians. Iranian officials, however, denied supporting Russia and downplayed the extent of their drone supply, asserting that their involvement was limited. Zelensky quoted them saying, 'We are not allies here,' indicating a tenuous relationship.
According to President Zelensky, Iran initially claimed to have sold only around 1,200 or 1,300 Shahed drones to Russia, but he countered these assertions, labeling them as lies. He highlighted that Iranโs assistance extends beyond simply exporting the drones; it has also played a role in the establishment of drone production capabilities for Russia. Zelensky pointed out that Iran provided production licenses and facilitated the construction of two factories for drone manufacturing in Russia.
This development comes as Russia reportedly shifts its focus towards increasing the production of various types of drones, including cheaper alternatives, while simultaneously reducing its missile production. Zelensky's comments underscore the growing concern over the military cooperation between Iran and Russia, particularly how Iran's support can impact the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and regional security dynamics.
