Many seal pups in the Baltic Sea die early - investigations underway

Researchers are examining the health of newborn grey seals in the Baltic Sea following reports of health issues and high mortality rates.

In the Baltic Sea, researchers have initiated a study into the health of newborn grey seals after Sweden's Radio Ekot reported concerning health problems and an alarming mortality rate among the pups, with 30% dying within their early weeks. This examination is being conducted using drones to monitor the health of the pups amid the unique challenges they face during their vulnerable early days of life. The investigation comes in the context of environmental changes and recent outreach efforts following the relocation of trawling limits further out to sea last year. This shift aims to protect the marine ecosystem and ensure better conditions for the seals. The challenges faced by newborn seals have become pressing, particularly due to climate change, which has drastically limited ice availability in the region. Karl Lundström from Sweden’s Agricultural University noted that pups born on ice have higher survival rates compared to those born on land, highlighting the impact of climate conditions on seal populations. Researchers are now focusing on understanding and mitigating these issues to help improve the seal pups' chances of survival in the Baltic Sea.
