J. Olekas evaluated the candidate for the head of the Bank of Lithuania: "I had the opportunity to meet with him, to talk"

J. Olekas expressed confidence in the candidacy of G. Šimkus for the head of the Bank of Lithuania after meeting and discussing with him.

In a recent statement at the Lithuanian Parliament, J. Olekas commented on the candidacy of G. Šimkus for the position of the head of the Bank of Lithuania. Olekas conveyed his positive impression after having a meeting with Šimkus, highlighting his qualifications, experience, and ability to engage in discussions and provide suggestions. He expressed optimism that the Lithuanian Parliament would support the nomination once it is formally presented.

Currently, the Board of the Bank of Lithuania consists of five members, including G. Šimkus, who has been serving as the central bank's chairman since April 2021. Alongside him, there are his two vice-presidents and two additional board members. The proposal for a second five-year term for Šimkus is set to be presented to the Seimas by the President's office. This process comes with the President’s authority to appoint and dismiss board members based on the recommendations of the board's chairman.

The discussion surrounding the candidacy and the central bank's leadership is notable as it reflects on Lithuania's financial governance during a time of economic challenges. Olekas's endorsement might carry weight among lawmakers, influencing how the Seimas views Šimkus's past contributions and potential future directions for the Bank of Lithuania.
