As the flood threat intensifies in the coastal region, the Lithuanian army is being deployed

The Lithuanian army is being dispatched to Šilutė as part of the second phase of flood preparedness in light of rising water levels and reports of flooding in surrounding areas.

On Tuesday, the National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC) activated the second phase of flood preparation in the Šilutė region, which involves implementing temporary protective measures, targeted evacuation of residents from specific areas, and mobilization of resources to conduct rescue operations. This decision comes as vital reports of flooding in the Žalgirių village and a sudden spike in water levels in Rusnė and Uostadvaris raised alarm among authorities and residents alike.

To manage the situation effectively, the Lithuanian army will conduct engineering reconnaissance of water bodies on the same day and assess the potential use of engineering measures in collaboration with hydrologists from "Meteo LT." Residents in the flood risk zone are advised to remove valuable items from basements or lower-level rooms and prepare an emergency kit that includes essential documents and necessities. Preparations for quick responding, including possible evacuation, are urged as the situation evolves.

This proactive response reflects Lithuania's commitment to ensuring public safety during natural disasters and highlights the collaboration between military and civil authorities in addressing emergency situations. The activation of the second flood management phase underscores the seriousness of the threat in the region, which is under constant observation as conditions develop further, with the central focus on safeguarding lives and property in the affected areas.
