Report: Schools Lack Measures Against Violence and Threats

A report indicates that one in four teachers feels their school is minimally addressing issues of violence, threats, and harassment among students.

A newly released report by Fafo reveals alarming insights into the workplace environment within Norwegian secondary schools, particularly concerning the lack of measures to combat violence, threats, and harassment. According to the report, one in four teachers believes their institution is doing little to prevent such negative behaviors. This finding highlights a significant gap in school policy and practice regarding student safety and teacher wellbeing.

The examination also underscores that staff working in vocational and adapted departments experience more threats and harassment than their counterparts in regular settings. The challenges become increasingly severe as the size of the school grows, indicating that larger institutions may struggle more with these issues. Teachers and school administrators are urged to consider the implications of these findings seriously, as they could affect staff morale and student learning environments.

Thom Jambak, the deputy leader of the Education Association, expressed frustration that despite long-standing awareness of these challenges, little action has been taken to improve the situation. He emphasized the importance of addressing these issues promptly for the well-being of both teachers and students, hinting that a sustained lack of intervention could lead to a deteriorating educational atmosphere.
