Ryanair fights 'ludicrous' court award of £4,425 for lost suitcase
Ryanair is contesting a court ruling that awarded a couple £4,425 for the loss of a suitcase during a flight to Copenhagen, claiming the amount is excessive.
A couple from Kilmarnock, Scotland, has been engaged in a prolonged legal battle with Ryanair over the loss of a suitcase during their trip to Copenhagen. The incident occurred in September 2023 when Rosie McGrane's suitcase was reported missing after she landed. Despite Ryanair's assurances that the suitcase would be sent to her friend’s residence in Denmark, it never arrived, prompting her and her husband Chris to initiate a formal complaint towards the end of 2023. This eventually led to a year-long correspondence with the airline, which concluded with them lodging a legal complaint in March 2025.
In July 2025, the Edinburgh Sheriff Court ruled in favor of the couple, ordering Ryanair to pay them £4,425.37 in compensation for the inconvenience and loss suffered. However, despite the court's decision, Rosie has reported that she has yet to see any compensation payment from Ryanair, leading to frustrations over the company’s response and willingness to comply with the court order. Ryanair has called the award 'ludicrous,' reflecting its dissatisfaction with the ruling and indicating potential plans to appeal or otherwise contest the compensation.
This case highlights a growing concern among travelers regarding airline accountability for lost luggage, a recurring issue in air travel that can lead to significant distress for passengers. The couple’s legal struggle against Ryanair could set a precedent for future claims related to lost luggage, particularly concerning the extent to which airlines are responsible for compensating passengers for missing items, especially when they are upheld by court decisions.
