"Strict Kari": Will be able to expel students for four weeks
Norwegian Education Minister proposes a four-week expulsion period for students who engage in violence or threats against classmates.
Norwegian Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun has announced a proposal to expel students who commit acts of violence or threats against their peers for up to four weeks. The initiative aims to create a safer classroom environment and provide those expelled with access to alternative educational methods during their time away from the classroom. The proposal also addresses students whose disruptive behavior severely impacts the learning atmosphere, extending the expulsion period to eight weeks in extreme cases.
This new policy is designed to prioritize the educational rights of all students while addressing serious incidents that compromise safety in schools. The Minister emphasizes that expulsions will only be used in extreme circumstances, underscoring the need for long-term support and interventions for students who exhibit behavioral challenges. By providing alternative learning opportunities, the government hopes to reintegrate affected students back into a healthier educational setting.
The proposal is currently open for public consultation, which indicates the government’s commitment to gathering feedback and refining the measures before implementation. If adopted, this policy could significantly change how schools in Norway handle disciplinary issues and could set a precedent for similar approaches to student behavior management in other regions.
