Living in a ‘Safe’ City ... Ansan Citizens’ Groups Launch Promotion Committee
Ansan citizens’ groups launched a promotion committee to prioritize life and safety in city management on the 12th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster.
On April 17th, 130 local civic groups in Ansan, including the Family Council for Victims of the Sewol Ferry Disaster, held a ceremony at the Ansan Cultural and Arts Center to announce the establishment of the 'AN(safe) city and SAN(live)' citizens' promotion committee. Their declaration emphasized the importance of placing life and safety at the core of urban management and aimed to connect civic voices with policy and institutional changes through local collaborative action. This initiative marks a renewed commitment to practical changes in the city, moving beyond remembrance of the tragic 2014 ferry incident.
The promotion committee was established to coincide with the 12th anniversary of the Sewol disaster, as a reflection of the determination to implement tangible changes in Ansan. Since 2023, the participating groups have actively planned the project by organizing eight safety forums and other related activities. Various marginalized groups, particularly those vulnerable to safety threats, voiced their concerns and demands for enhanced safety measures during the ceremony. Individuals advocated for a shift from reactive safety measures to proactive policies, underscoring the need for prevention and structure within the community.
Speakers at the event highlighted the situation of migrants and people with disabilities in Ansan, reinforcing the necessity of a living environment where every community member, regardless of background, can live securely. The promotion committee called for policies that prioritize the lives of those most at risk and declared their vision of transforming Ansan into a city that symbolizes life safety beyond the pain of the Sewol tragedy, representing new hope for South Korea.
