Russian tanker drifting without crew in the sea, was targeted by drone attack... this is the danger
A Russian oil tanker, named Arctic Metagaz, has been drifting in the Mediterranean Sea between Italy and Malta for several days without a crew, raising environmental concerns over the substantial fuel and gas it contains.
The Arctic Metagaz, a Russian oil tanker, has become a significant environmental concern as it drifts helplessly in the Mediterranean Sea, specifically between Italy and Malta. Authorities have issued warnings about the vessel, which is deemed an environmental 'time bomb' due to the large quantities of fuel and liquid natural gas (LNG) onboard. Helicopter inspections have revealed extensive damage to the ship, including a large hole on the port side and dark stains in the water around it, indicating potential pollution risks.
Italian maritime officials estimate that the Arctic Metagaz still contains approximately 900 metric tons of diesel fuel and over 60,000 metric tons of LNG, which, for now, remains secure within the ship's structure. However, the threat of an environmental disaster looms large as the vessel has been abandoned, exposing the surrounding marine environment to serious risks should any leakage or explosion occur. This situation has escalated fears about maritime safety and the need for prompt intervention.
The tanker might be considered part of Russia's so-called shadow fleet, which comprises older tankers that come into play to circumvent sanctions on Russian oil exports. The current status of the Arctic Metagaz not only highlights the dangers associated with abandoned vessels but also raises questions about geopolitical tensions and environmental protections in international waters, necessitating urgent action from the authorities involved to avert possible disasters.
