Kaleva: Elderly person from Oulu received surgery date from Tampere โ refusal had harsh consequences
An elderly patient was removed from the treatment guarantee due to her inability to travel for cataract surgery, highlighting issues in healthcare access
A multi-ill elderly individual from Oulu lost her treatment guarantee after being unable to travel to Tampere for cataract surgery. The need for the surgery was identified last October, and an appointment was offered just two weeks away. However, due to practical considerations such as her daughterโs job, travel time, and costs involved, the journey of nearly 500 kilometers each way was deemed impossible. Consequently, when the elderly woman declined to make the trip, she fell out of the treatment guarantee framework. Her daughter reported to Kaleva that her mother was placed back on the waiting list, but there is uncertainty regarding the timeline for the next appointment.
