New Twist in Viking Line Data Breach - Police Investigating
The Helsinki police have launched an investigation into a data breach involving Viking Line, which appears to be linked to an international hacking group.
The Helsinki police have begun an investigation into a data breach at Viking Line, a prominent shipping company. Initial reports indicated that the breach may be connected to an international hacker group, as stated by a subcontractor working with Viking Line. This revelation follows a formal complaint filed by the subcontractor regarding the incident, prompting police involvement under charges of data breach.
According to Iltalehti, the breach led to the theft of customer information, yet Viking Line's communications chief, Christa Grönlund, clarified that the breach pertains specifically to online pre-orders and does not compromise the entire customer registry or passenger data. This reassurance comes as part of the company's efforts to mitigate customer concerns following the incident.
Furthermore, the communications director, Johanna Boijer-Svahnström, reported to Yle that affected customers have already been contacted. An estimated 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the company's customer base was impacted, highlighting the incident's limited but concerning scope amidst the broader context of rising data breaches in the maritime sector.
