Tukes: The cause of the Janakkala fireworks storage fire was defective fireworks

The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency has concluded that a recent fireworks storage fire in Janakkala was likely caused by damaged fireworks.

The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has completed its investigation into a fireworks storage fire in Janakkala, Kanta-Häme, which occurred in November 2025. According to Tukes's accident investigation report, the fire was likely initiated by a defective firework that had been damaged during transport or handling. The incident took place at the storage facility of Pyrokratia Oy, a company selling fireworks.

The fire ignited when a worker inspected a cardboard box containing unused professional fireworks returned from a fireworks display held in France. Upon touching the firework within the box, it ignited, quickly triggering other fireworks stored in the same container. The blaze spread rapidly in an explosive manner across the storage area, affecting multiple containers.

In the wake of the fire, the storage area was isolated for several days to prevent further incidents. The damaged containers involved in the blaze contained fireworks and pyrotechnical equipment meant for professional use. Following the fire, proper disposal measures for the fireworks destroyed have taken place to ensure safety and compliance with regulations, highlighting the need for stringent quality control measures in the fireworks industry.
