Children aged 5 to 9 lead the increase in mental health admissions in SP

Mental health admissions among children and adolescents have surged in Sao Paulo, particularly for those aged 5 to 9, who experienced a 98.3% increase from 2020 to 2025.

Between 2020 and 2025, the state of Sao Paulo saw a significant rise in admissions for mental and behavioral disorders among children and adolescents, with the most alarming statistics found in the 5 to 9 age group, which recorded a staggering 98.3% increase in hospitalizations. Following this age group, adolescents aged 10 to 14 also exhibited a significant rise of 78.1%. These statistics indicate a growing mental health crisis among the younger population, drawing attention to the urgent need for mental health services in these formative years.

Moreover, children aged 5 to 9 not only led in hospitalization rates but also represented the largest share of outpatient clinical procedures for mental and behavioral disorders across all age groups during the same timeframe. This demographic underwent an incredible increase, amounting to 775,600 additional clinical attendances over five years. Such procedures encompassed a range of essential mental health services including consultations and treatments for various disorders, reflecting a critical need for increased healthcare resources in this sector.

The data, compiled by the Secretary of State for Health in Sao Paulo, underscores a concerning trend that points to rising social and emotional issues faced by children and adolescents. The underlying causes may include various socio-economic factors, pandemic-related stress, and increased awareness of mental health issues. Addressing these challenges will require a robust response from healthcare providers and policymakers to ensure effective intervention and support for these vulnerable age groups.
