Tick season has begun – Turku University is again asking for tick letters

The tick season has started in southern Finland and the Ã…land Islands, prompting Turku University to seek public contributions of ticks for research purposes.

This month, the tick season has officially begun in southern Finland and the Ã…land Islands, marking a period of increased risk for tick-borne diseases as reported by Turku University. Citizens are invited to contribute by sending in samples of ticks they encounter, allowing researchers to study the pathogens present in these ticks. Health risks associated with ticks rise significantly during the peak activity months of May-June and August-September, when the majority of ticks are expected to be active.

Research indicates that about one in five ticks collected early in the season may carry Borrelia bacteria, which causes Lyme disease. The information gathered from the public's submitted ticks will assist in identifying and understanding the distribution of various pathogens that ticks can transmit, including those causing tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and other diseases. Important insights from previous collections have provided valuable data regarding the prevalence of these disease-causing agents in the tick population across Finland.

With the increasing awareness surrounding tick-borne diseases, this initiative not only encourages community participation in potentially reducing health risks but also enhances scientific knowledge surrounding ticks. Turku University's continued collaboration with the public emphasizes the importance of proactive health measures as tick season approaches and promotes an informed approach to managing tick-related concerns in the region.
