Lucente: "Another 20 trains purchased, in addition to the 214 already in service"
The Lombardy region has announced the purchase of 20 additional trains, enhancing its public transport investments totaling over three billion euros since 2023.
The Lombardy region in Italy has significantly increased its public transport investments, committing over three billion euros to improve local services. This includes a renewed fleet with 214 new trains that have already been put into service as part of an investment of 1.7 billion euros, along with plans to add more than 1,000 green buses by the end of the year. Recently, the regional government approved the purchase of 20 additional trains, which consist of 12 Caravaggio and 8 Donizetti models.
Franco Lucente, the regional transport assessor, presented a report on the progress made over the past three years during the conference "Mobility in Lombardy: Achievements and Future Challenges." He emphasized the importance of securing additional resources from the national government, citing the need for changes in transportation funding regulations to better support Lombardy.
The commitment from local politicians, particularly from the Brothers of Italy party, was highlighted as essential for ensuring ongoing investments in public transport. Lucente's remarks come at a time when the Lombardy transport sector is seeking to address challenges and enhance its capacity, particularly as it plays a crucial role in the daily commutes of millions of residents in the region.
