Drone and rocket strikes in Iraq's capital
Drone and rocket attacks targeted the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, including an assault on the U.S. Embassy, leading to damage and intercepted drones.
On Monday evening, a drone struck a hotel located within the heavily fortified Green Zone of Baghdad. Following this, several unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted by air defense systems in the area. The situation escalated on Tuesday morning when fresh drone and rocket attacks were directed at the U.S. Embassy compound, generating black smoke seen rising above the buildings. Security forces reported that three drones and four rockets targeted the embassy, with at least one drone crashing inside the complex.
Just hours before this latest assault, air defense systems had successfully thwarted an earlier missile attack aimed at the U.S. Embassy. While details on the assailants remain sparse, there are suspicions that the attacks may be retaliation orchestrated by Tehran or its allies in response to military operations undertaken by Washington and Tel Aviv. Notably, Israel had announced a new ground operation against the Iran-backed Shiite group Hezbollah the same day, potentially heightening tensions in the region.
The ongoing drone and rocket strikes underscore the volatile security situation in Baghdad, particularly surrounding the Green Zone, which houses many foreign embassies and government offices. The resilience of air defense systems in intercepting attacks is crucial, but the repeated incidents raise questions about the security measures in place for embassies and foreign nationals in Iraq, as well as the implications for U.S.-Iran relations moving forward.
