China Resumes Flights to North Korea

China is set to resume direct flights to North Korea on March 30, marking a resumption of international travel routes that were halted due to the pandemic.

Direct flights between Beijing and Pyongyang are slated to resume on March 30, 2023, according to reservation data from the travel platform Ctrip.com and reported by Bloomberg. This restoration of air travel follows a significant disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic that led to the suspension of flights in 2020. Additionally, international passenger train connections between Beijing and Dandong to Pyongyang were reestablished on March 12, indicating a broader revival of connectivity between the two countries.

The reestablishment of these travel routes suggests a strengthening of diplomatic and economic ties between China and North Korea. This development follows Kim Jong Unโ€™s attendance at a military parade in Beijing last year alongside prominent leaders such as President Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, signaling increasing collaboration amidst geopolitical tensions in the region. As both nations work to fortify their relationship, the renewed flights could also serve to boost North Koreaโ€™s isolated economy, which has been heavily affected by pandemic-induced restrictions.

Flight CA121 is scheduled to depart from Beijing Capital International Airport at 8:05 AM local time and will arrive at Pyongyang International Airport at 11:00 AM. The return flight will leave Pyongyang at midday, with similar flights listed for future dates. This move not only revives an important link for travelers but also reflects the evolving dynamics of North East Asian geopolitics as regional neighbors adjust their policies in response to ongoing global shifts.
