Lagos CP defends task force, calls viral extortion video ‘misleading’

The Lagos State Police Commissioner dismissed allegations of extortion against the task force after a viral video claimed officers wrongfully detained a driver for money.

The Lagos State Police Command has refuted claims of extortion involving its Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, labeling a circulating viral video as misleading and malicious. Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh defended the task force's operations, emphasizing their role in enforcing traffic regulations and maintaining order throughout Lagos, particularly through their engagement in environmental law enforcement.

During a press briefing held at the command headquarters in Ikeja, CP Jimoh addressed the accusations stemming from a video released by ObjectvMedia. The video alleged that task force operatives unlawfully arrested a driver, asserting that officials had manipulated a scenario by repositioning the driver’s vehicle on a one-way street to create a traffic violation for financial gain. In response to the claims made in the video, the driver denied ever having taken his vehicle to the location in question, suggesting that the narrative portrayed in the video was fabricated.

Following the allegations, CP Jimoh disclosed that an initial inquiry was launched to investigate the situation thoroughly. He underscored the commitment of the police command to transparency and accountability in their operations, reinforcing the task force's integral role in public safety and order in Lagos. The commissioner’s statements aim to restore public trust amidst concerns regarding police misconduct and to clarify the operational framework of the task force amid the scrutiny from the viral video.
