Former Senator Mecias de Jesus takes office as a councilor of the Roraima Court of Auditors
Mecias de Jesus, a former senator, has taken office as a councilor of the Roraima Court of Auditors after stepping down from his political career.
Mecias de Jesus, who served as a senator for Roraima, officially took office as a councilor of the Tribunal de Contas de Roraima (TCE-RR) on Monday, October 16. The ceremony, held at the Fórum Cível Advogado Sobral Pinto, was attended by various state officials, marking a significant transition in Mecias' career after 33 years in the legislative field. By accepting this lifetime position, he relinquished his senatorial mandate, allowing his substitute, Roberta Acioly, to step into the role. As a councilor, Mecias de Jesus will have the important responsibility of overseeing the utilization of public resources in Roraima. His appointment was ratified on August 21, 2025, filling the vacancy left by Manoel Dantas, who retired the previous June. Mecias, known for his significant influence in local politics, has been a strong supporter of Governor Antonio Denarium, marking an alignment with the current administration even after a controversial past. Notably, Mecias de Jesus was previously implicated in the 'Escândalo dos Gafanhotos,' attributed as the largest corruption scheme in the state’s history, where he faced convictions for illicit enrichment. His ascension to the TCE-RR raises questions about his past and how it will influence his oversight role in the management of public funds in Roraima, reflecting the complex interplay of politics and accountability in the region.
