Kalm: The US government has failed to justify the war in Iran to its people

Helga Kalm argues that the US government struggles to justify its military actions in Iran and that unclear goals may affect public support and upcoming elections.

Helga Kalm, the deputy director of the International Centre for Defence and Security, expressed concerns about the escalating complexity of the United States' military engagement in Iran. She pointed out that the US has not clearly defined its objectives in the conflict, making it difficult for citizens to understand the rationale behind the war. This lack of clarity, combined with the challenges of a prolonged conflict, could potentially impact the outcome of upcoming American midterm elections, given the declining popularity of the current administration.

Kalm highlighted that while the initiation of the war seemed straightforward—with the initial goal of taking down the Ayatollah—subsequent military and strategic progress has proven to be significantly more complicated. If the conflict persists, it raises questions about the sustainability of US public support for the ongoing military operations and the overall effectiveness of the strategy being employed in Iran. The situation remains tenuous, especially with the continued existence of key military capabilities within Iran, such as enriched uranium reserves.

Furthermore, Kalm noted some successes in military operations, notably the destruction of missile stockpiles and damage to the Iranian navy. However, the challenges ahead are formidable as Iran's enriched uranium capabilities, currently around 60 percent purity, remain a considerable threat. The longer the conflict drags on without clarity and a defined mission, the more difficult it will be for the US government to maintain both a coherent military strategy and public support at home, she concluded.
