A great honor for Kari Jalonen

Finnish coach Kari Jalonen has been awarded the Coach of the Year title for the 2025-2026 season in Germany's top hockey league, DEL.

On Monday, Finnish hockey coach Kari Jalonen received a prestigious recognition, being named the Coach of the Year for the upcoming 2025-2026 season in Germany's top hockey league, the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). This honor was reported by the German newspaper Die Rheinpfalz. Alongside Jalonen's accolade, Finland also celebrated the awards for the best player and best goaltender, which were awarded to Janne Juvonen, known for his stints with Jokerit and Pelicans.

Kari Jalonen is currently in his second season coaching Kölner Haie, the team which achieved remarkable success by winning the DEL regular season and tying the all-time regular season points record in Germany with a total of 116 points. Under Jalonen's leadership, the Kölner Haie secured a strong standing, demonstrating not only skill but also strategic prowess throughout the season. Meanwhile, Janne Juvonen excelled as the team's goaltender, boasting an impressive save percentage of 93.2 and a goals-against average of 2.04, contributing significantly to the team's success with 26 wins.

As the season progresses, Jalonen has expressed that the focus is now shifting to the performance of the players rather than his coaching tenure, which will conclude with the regular season. His contract is set to end this season, with reports from various sources, including Iltalehti, suggesting that he may take on a coaching role with Tappara next. Jalonen's career has been marked by numerous achievements in Finnish hockey, and this latest recognition adds to his impressive resume.
