Megacana: CADI Sugarcane and Peanut Highlights Gains from Crop Rotation for the Bioenergy Sector

Producers in Brazil are increasingly recognizing the benefits of crop rotation, particularly the combination of sugarcane and peanuts, for improving soil health and productivity in the bioenergy sector.

The trend toward enhanced productivity and soil health is prompting sugarcane producers in Brazil to pay more attention to crop rotation. One particularly successful pairing that has been spotlighted is that of sugarcane and peanuts. This tactical and strategic approach is being underscored by Canacampo's upcoming event, the 1st Megacana 2026 Meeting: the CADI Sugarcane and Peanut, to be held on March 19.

The choice of peanuts for revitalizing sugarcane plantations is strategically significant. Sugarcane is a nutrient-intensive crop that depletes soil over time, whereas peanuts, being a leguminous plant, contribute to nitrogen fixation and enhance soil structure. This complementary relationship results in more vigorous subsequent sugarcane crops with lower establishment costs, aligning with sustainable agricultural practices.

According to the technical team at Canacampo, the CADI will feature varieties and clones from Rideza, IAC, and CTC. Agricultural coordinator Rodrigo Piau noted the growing strength of peanuts in regions like Iturama and Frutal, indicating that peanut cultivation will have an important role in the future of sugarcane production in Brazil. This focus on crop rotation could play a crucial role in addressing both economic and environmental challenges faced by farmers in the bioenergy sector.
