Court orders João Pessoa to create a plan for zoonosis control and protection of abandoned dogs and cats

A court in Paraíba has mandated the city of João Pessoa to develop a comprehensive plan to manage zoonoses and care for abandoned dogs and cats within 180 days.

The 1st Civil Chamber of the Court of Justice of Paraíba has ruled that the Prefeitura de João Pessoa must formulate an action plan within 180 days aimed at controlling zoonoses and caring for abandoned dogs and cats. This decision, released on Monday, follows a request from the Public Ministry of Paraíba, highlighting the need for a public policy that focuses on animal population control and welfare.

The plan should include crucial measures such as population control, animal sheltering, sterilization programs, animal identification, and awareness campaigns regarding responsible pet ownership. The initiative underscores the importance of managing the stray animal population to prevent the spread of diseases, as sterilized animals contribute to reducing the number of strays and mitigating the risk of zoonoses.

Despite efforts to engage with the city's Environment Secretariat and the Municipal Attorney's Office for comment, no response has been received. This ruling reflects an increasing trend in Brazil’s judicial system, aiming to enhance animal welfare and control over zoonotic diseases, which has implications for public health and community responsibility towards abandoned animals.
