Opera Leipzig has celebrated a long-awaited premiere with Bernd Franke's new opera 'Coming Up for Air,' which explores the theme of breathlessness through interconnected narratives. This production is significant as it weaves tales across different times and geographies, beginning in 1898 Paris and extending to the Norwegian island of Karmøy in the 1950s, culminating in contemporary Canada. The opera is based on a novel by Sarah Leipciger and showcases the artistic vision of the traveling composer Franke, who has a diverse background, being born in Weißenfels in 1959.

The opera's libretto, adapted into English by Jessica Walker, was commissioned by the Opera Leipzig and is notable for its engaging storytelling, which combines the personal struggles of its characters with broader historical contexts.
