Reuters: The Peace Council is conducting negotiations with Hamas regarding Gaza
The Peace Council, led by Donald Trump, is negotiating with Hamas in Cairo to maintain a ceasefire in Gaza amid escalating tensions.
According to three sources from Reuters, representatives of the "Peace Council," headed by U.S. President Donald Trump, met with officials from Hamas in Cairo. This meeting comes in response to increased pressure on the Gaza ceasefire due to military actions involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran. The gathering, which took place earlier this week, marks the first publicly acknowledged discussion between Hamas and the Peace Council since the commencement of the conflict.
Following the discussions, Israel announced that it would soon reopen the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, which had been closed since the escalation against Iran began. One of the sources indicated that Israel's decision was a direct outcome of the meeting between Hamas and the Peace Council, a newly established international body personally overseen by Trump, tasked with managing the situation in Gaza post-conflict. This suggests that diplomatic efforts are being made to stabilize the situation in Gaza, albeit under challenging circumstances.
Sources also reported that Hamas representatives cautioned the council about the possibility of the movement retracting its commitments under the existing ceasefire agreement if Israel continued to impose new restrictions on the Gaza Strip during the ongoing conflict with Iran. The borders of the Gaza Strip were closed by Israel on February 28, under the pretext that operational needs could not be met in light of the war, raising concerns about access to essential supplies and humanitarian aid for the region's residents.
