FG fulfills Tinubu’s promises to D’Tigress, presents houses, national honours
The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its promises to the D’Tigress by presenting them with houses and national honours after their victory at the 2025 Afrobasket in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Nigerian Federal Government has honored its commitments to the D’Tigress, the national women's basketball team, by formally presenting them with houses and national honors. This event took place in Lyon, France, coinciding with the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament, and was led by Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, along with Director-General Bukola Olopade. The documentation and accolades were intended to recognize the players and officials for their achievement at the 2025 Afrobasket, where they were crowned champions.
During the presentation, Dikko emphasized the government’s dedication to rewarding excellence and the importance of swiftly fulfilling promises made to athletes. He articulated that this approach marks a significant departure from past practices, where pledges to athletes often went unacknowledged for long periods. The swift response from the current administration has been framed as a means to restore faith in governmental support for sports and athletes within the nation.
Furthermore, Dikko expressed gratitude towards President Bola Tinubu for initiating this shift, highlighting that such actions not only honor the athletes' achievements but also demonstrate sports' transformative power in the lives of individuals and communities. The presentation serves as a reflection of a broader commitment by the government to elevate the status of Nigerian sports on the international stage, ensuring that athletes receive the respect, recognition, and resources they deserve.
