Washington signals it wants China kept out of Brazil’s largest port auction
The U.S. has expressed its desire to prevent a Chinese company from winning the concession for Brazil's Santos port, indicating its strategic interests in the region amid U.S.-China rivalry.
U.S. consul-general Kevin Murakami has recently communicated concerns to Brazilian port executives regarding the potential concession of the Santos container terminal to a Chinese firm. At a March 5 event hosted by Grupo A Tribuna in Santos, he emphasized the terminal's critical strategic importance to the United States, connecting it to broader geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing. Murakami warned against allowing the terminal to fall into 'unwanted hands', highlighting the role of this megadeal in the context of ongoing U.S.-China rivalry in international trade and infrastructure.
