'It is always audited': Sheinbaum clarifies the origin of the account to which AMLO urged donations for Cuba

Claudia Sheinbaum clarified the origin of the bank account that former president AMLO asked people to donate to for Cuba amid the island's crisis.

On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed concerns regarding the bank account that former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) encouraged people to contribute to for aiding Cuba. She informed the public that the account, opened by a citizen initiative, is associated with a civil organization designated to collect donations for the Cuban populace suffering from the effects of the U.S. oil embargo.

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum explained that AMLO's request for donations was a gesture of solidarity with the Cuban people currently facing significant hardships. The funds would be deposited into an account managed by the civil organization, which had received clearance from the Finance Ministry to operate as a legitimate donor entity. This clarification aims to ensure transparency regarding the fundraising efforts and the operational integrity of the organization handling the donations.

This initiative comes amid ongoing debates in Mexico about foreign aid, national solidarity, and the implications of U.S. sanctions on countries like Cuba. Sheinbaum's remarks reflect her administration's commitment to humanitarian efforts while navigating complex international relations, especially concerning the U.S. and its foreign policy strategies. The clarification also serves to reinforce trust in governmental and civil society efforts to respond to crises affecting neighboring countries.
