Parliament: Information about Greek sailors trapped in the Persian Gulf
The Greek government is addressing the situation of Greek sailors trapped in the Persian Gulf, with 34 Greek-flagged ships reported in the region and authorities preparing measures for their protection and repatriation.
The Greek government has confirmed the presence of 34 Greek-flagged ships in areas including the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf. This information was provided by Deputy Minister of Shipping Stefanos Gikas during a parliamentary session in response to a question from a communist party MP. Gikas assured that the government is prioritizing the safety and potential repatriation of Greek sailors trapped in these regions.
Currently, there are still 10 Greek-flagged ships in the Persian Gulf, manned by 90 Greek sailors. Additionally, there are another 70 Greek sailors on two cruise ships located in Doha and Dubai. Gikas emphasized the government's readiness to respond promptly to any necessary actions required to safeguard these individuals and facilitate their return.
According to Gikas, the total number of ships of all nationalities trapped in the Persian Gulf exceeds 1,000. Moreover, there are 168 ships with Greek interests in the nearby areas including the Persian Gulf, Hormuz Strait, and surrounding regions. This situation highlights the broader issues concerning maritime safety and the geopolitical implications of the ongoing challenges in this pivotal area of international shipping.
