Election rival plans to dismantle Orbán's empire with top managers
Hungarian opposition party Tisza is seeking to appoint top business executives to government positions if they win the upcoming parliamentary elections to dismantle Viktor Orbán's entrenched system.
The opposition party Tisza in Hungary is leveraging the upcoming parliamentary elections to promote a radical shift in governance, where business leaders would take on governmental roles. Péter Magyar, the party leader, believes that attracting skilled managers from the business sector is vital for dismantling the system that has allowed Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party to consolidate power over state institutions since 2010. This strategy underscores a reliance on expertise beyond traditional politics to instigate reform.
The Fidesz party, under Orbán, has amassed substantial control over judiciary, media, and state-owned enterprises, creating a climate where the government exerts heavy influence over these sectors. The Tisza party, by promising a regime change, aims to rally public support by addressing the issues stemming from Orbán’s long-standing dominance. These changes are intended not only to restore democratic norms but also to reinvigorate Hungary’s image within the European Union.
Deputy chairman Zoltán Tarr emphasized the importance of selecting managers who are free from the politics of the past, allowing for a clean slate in governance that could effectively counter Orbán's influence. This plan also aims to leverage EU funds, which Hungary has struggled to access in recent years due to Orbán's confrontational stance toward Brussels. Therefore, the emphasis on appointing business executives serves dual purposes: executing necessary reforms and navigating EU financial assistance to rejuvenate the economy after prolonged political strife.
