Kallas: This is not Europe's war
Kaja Kallas emphasized that the ongoing conflict involving Iran should not be regarded as a European war, amidst discussions within the EU about strengthening naval operations to protect trade routes in the region.
Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated on Monday that EU foreign ministers conveyed a clear desire to enhance the Aspides operation during their meeting. This operation seeks to secure maritime trade routes in the region, particularly in the Red Sea. However, Kallas noted that there is currently no intention to expand the operation's mandate to include the strategic Strait of Hormuz, despite its significance in global shipping.
During the discussions, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen indicated that Finland is considering participating in a military operation with European countries to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Valtonen highlighted that Finland is already involved in the Aspides operation through the deployment of officers, with up to five staff officers operating in the command center located in Greece. This engagement illustrates Finland's commitment to contributing to EU efforts in enhancing maritime security.
Kallas emphasized that the conflict involving Iran should not be seen as a European war, urging a perspective that differentiates EU security interests from conflicts arising in other regions. Her comments reflect a broader EU stance on maintaining stability without entangling itself in external conflicts, while focusing on improving security measures to protect essential trade routes against potential disruptions. This balancing act portrays the EU's cautious approach to geopolitical tensions.
