International Energy Agency: Additional Reserves Ready If Oil Crisis Continues

The International Energy Agency has indicated its readiness to release additional emergency oil reserves if the energy supply disruptions due to the Gulf war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continue.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that it may release additional emergency oil reserves to stabilize the market if the current disruptions to energy supplies persist, which are attributed to ongoing conflicts in the Gulf region and interruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol noted that the agency's 32 member countries may again draw from their strategic reserves following the recent release of about 400 million barrels intended to ease market pressures and curb rising prices.

Birol highlighted that while the amount released recently has provided a temporary buffer against soaring oil prices, substantial stocks remain available. He emphasized that although this withdrawal was significant, member states still possess a large quantity of reserves, amounting to approximately 1.4 billion barrels of additional strategic reserves or industrial stocks if needed. This indicates a level of preparedness and responsiveness among these nations to market volatility caused by geopolitical tensions.

Furthermore, Birol linked the stability of energy markets directly to the resumption of oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, considering it a vital maritime route. The ongoing disruptions in this area are central to the challenges that the oil markets face, and restoring the normal flow of oil transportation is deemed critical for alleviating the current crisis and preventing further price hikes.
