Czechia will support the suspension of the emissions trading system in the EU, announced Babiš

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced support for an Italian proposal to suspend the EU Emissions Trading System for energy, heavy industry, and aviation during an upcoming European Council meeting.

During a government meeting, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš disclosed that Czechia intends to support an Italian initiative aimed at pausing the application of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) specifically in the sectors of energy, heavy industry, and aviation. This proposal is scheduled for discussion at the European Council meeting taking place in Brussels from March 19 to 20. Babiš highlighted the historical significance of the emissions trading scheme, noting that it has transformed into a trading system that benefits those exempted from paying for emissions.

Babiš emphasized the urgency of implementing changes to the emissions system in light of the current economic challenges facing European industries, particularly exacerbated by geopolitical crises, such as those in the Middle East. He aims to advocate for a price cap within the emissions system and remove energy-intensive sectors from its purview, which he believes is crucial for supporting European industry amid rising energy costs.

The government's approach gained support from the opposition Civil Democratic Party (ODS), which acknowledged that past policies have facilitated broader partnerships within Europe, including with Italy, to collaboratively alleviate the adverse effects of the emissions regulations on energy prices. This consensus among political factions underlines the multidimensional approach required to address the impending energy crisis and safeguard economic stability in the region.
